Standing on Cold War Secrets: Visiting the Weldon Spring Site

    March 1, 2026 - By Jen

The Weldon Spring Site is a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Legacy Management–controlled nuclear waste disposal site with a public interpretive center. That combination alone makes it memorable. During our Route 66 Centennial road trip, we were staying at Dr. Edmund A. Babler Memorial State Park just outside of…

    February 25, 2026 - By Jen

During our three months at home base for winter, we squeezed in a few smaller trips without the RV. In January, we flew out to visit my dad in Oregon and spent a weekend at a conference in southern Illinois. Then in February, we headed out for a long weekend…

    February 20, 2026 - By Jen

We spent a long weekend in Madison while Josh was working a vendor booth, and in between coffee dates and exploring with friends, I carved out a Saturday morning for something a little different, a free tour of the Wisconsin State Capitol. What I expected to be a quick, “sure,…

From Quantum Labs to Newton’s Apple Tree: A Day at UW–Madison

    February 18, 2026 - By Jen

I visited the L.R. Ingersoll Wonders of Physics Museum with two of my good friends, and we spent the entire day happily geeking out over science. After working in higher education for most of my career, I’ve never quite lost my love for wandering college campuses. They’re such hidden treasure…

Washington, DC is packed with incredible museums, and while everyone knows the big-name federal stops like the White House, U.S. Capitol, Supreme Court, National Archives, and Library of Congress, there’s a whole world of lesser-known federal museums and visitor experiences hiding in plain sight across DC, Northern Virginia, and nearby…

Why the Oregon Coast Aquarium Hooks Visitors Again and Again

    January 27, 2026 - By Jen

The Oregon Coast Aquarium is one of those stops that impressed us so much, we made time for it on both of our trips to Oregon, and honestly, that says a lot. Located in Newport, this coastal aquarium blends immersive exhibits, thoughtful animal care, and a strong focus on Pacific…

One of DC’s Best Free Museums: Visiting the National Postal Museum

    January 26, 2026 - By Jen

Tucked right across from Union Station, the Smithsonian National Postal Museum is one of DC’s most underrated gems, a place dedicated to telling America’s story through the mail we send, the stamps we collect, and the journeys letters make along the way. As the museum describes it, “through the preservation…

These 5 Colorful World’s Fair Houses Are Hiding in Indiana Dunes

    January 14, 2026 - By Jen

There’s a stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline where time feels like it folds in on itself, where five futuristic houses from the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair now sit perched above the dunes like colorful postcards from the past. These Century of Progress homes, once built as showpieces to preview the…

First stop: Cadillac Ranch, one of the most iconic Route 66 spots. And yes, we had to grab some spray paint and leave our mark.

Then we checked out the Giant Legs of Amarillo (complete with a whole fictional backstory).

Made a quick stop at Combine City before heading to Slug Bug Ranch, this one was actually moved recently when the original property sold. Bonus: it’s a more accessible spot if you still want that classic “spray paint a car” experience.

Amarillo might be known for a lot of things, but the roadside art scene is seriously underrated.

Before this was a Route 66 stop, it was a full-on Before this was a Route 66 stop, it was a full-on mining boomtown.

The Galena Mining & Historical Museum tells the story of this tiny town tucked into the corner of Kansas, built on galena, a lead ore that once drove everything here.
We showed up just in time to catch a docent giving a quick overview, then wandered the exhibits on our own. And honestly, it has a little bit of everything: minerals, cars, local art, old cameras, clothes, toys, appliances…you name it.

It’s one of those small-town museums that ends up being way more interesting than you expect.

Trying a new way to fill our RV water We don’t a Trying a new way to fill our RV water

We don’t always have hookups, and moving the whole trailer just to refill isn’t ideal, so we tested out an Everbilt drill pump to transfer water instead.

It wasn’t the fastest option, but it worked! We'll keep this in our back pocket for off-grid days.

Link for the drill pump kit is in my bio!

We saw this Forest River @impressionbyforestriver 36BR3 at the Chicago RV Show, and just look at this setup.

Two twin beds, and each one has its own little nook, with a TV, storage, and actual personal space.

If you’re traveling with kids, this is such a fun and functional layout. Not your average RV bunk room at all.

Baxter Springs became Kansas’s first cowtown after the Civil War when longhorn cattle were driven through, but its history goes back even further. The Osage Nation believed the area’s springs had healing properties long before settlers arrived.
It was also the site of the Baxter Springs Massacre, where around 100 U.S. soldiers were killed during the Civil War.

We learned all of this and so much more at the Baxter Springs Heritage Museum during our Route 66 trip, and it’s free to visit (open Tuesday–Sunday), which makes it an easy stop to add.
