Our RV Kitchen Renovation: We Actually Like it Now

    March 27, 2024 - By Jen

One of the most important spaces we renovated in our RV was the kitchen. Besides being a visually large space, it’s a space we use 3-7 times a day (I’m a snacker). When you use a space that often, you need it to be functional, especially when it’s a small…

Is Switching your RV to LED Lights Really Worth It?

    March 25, 2024 - By Jen

We always used LED light bulbs in our house because of electric bill savings, but are they worth it in an RV? LED lights are popular because they last longer (up to 40x as long!), are more energy efficient, perform better in the cold, and emit less heat. But we…

How My Husband Built Custom Reptile Enclosures Int How My Husband Built Custom Reptile Enclosures Into Our RV

When we started full-time RVing, we had two reptiles who were already part of our family: a bearded dragon and a corn snake. They'd been with us for years before we ever moved into the RV, so when we hit the road, they came with us.

We eventually lost our bearded dragon to cancer, and rather than keep two separate enclosures, we converted the space into one custom enclosure for our snake. My husband built it right into the nook where our TV and cabinet had been, using foam board for the walls and custom backgrounds, with lots of branches and greenery, plus a bioactive pit. The doors were made from framed acrylic panels so we could still easily access the enclosure.

A couple important disclaimers because I know someone is going to ask: we absolutely do not recommend getting a reptile specifically to keep in an RV. These were animals we'd already had for years before we started RVing. We're also experienced reptile keepers and have fostered dozens of reptiles, so we were very familiar with their needs, personalities, and how they used their space.

Their original enclosures were also smaller, especially our bearded dragon's, but we knew these particular animals extremely well and were comfortable with how they used their environments. This wasn't something we would recommend trying without significant reptile-keeping experience.

RV living definitely required some creativity, and turning an otherwise unused cabinet/TV nook into a proper enclosure was one of our more unusual projects!
If you haven't noticed yet, I don't post our adven If you haven't noticed yet, I don't post our adventures in real-time. (Partly because of safety, partly because of how long it takes me to edit things) So, I thought I'd do a little August recap of where we've been lately!

After some time at home base, we got back on the road and headed from Illinois to Ohio. We spent a week centered around Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and I enjoyed being back in the woods after so much of spring was spent in the desert.

Then we started heading east! Our first stop was a couple night at Niagara Falls. Josh had never been there before, and it's been over 15 years since I had been, so it's something we've wanted to do together. We packed in a lot in our one day, but the highlight is definitely Maid of the Mist! We also walked across the bridge to Canada for a few hours.

Next up, we stayed in North Adams, MA. From here we also explored the towns of Williamstown, Adams, Pittsfield, and Stockbridge. Massachussetts was a new state for both of us!

Another new state for both of us was Vermont. We definitely need to come back to Vermont to explore more, but we really enjoyed our little corner here in Bennington.

Next, we headed in New Hampshire, and Josh's dad drove out to meet up with us for a visit. We started with a couple nights in Tamworth, because Josh had read about crab trapper whiskey and wanted to try it. Not only was the distillery worth the visit, but we found a lot of fun stuff in the area in general!

Then we all headed up to Mount Washington, the state's high point. We rode the first ever cog railroad and had so much fun. We were able to stay the night here in the railroad's parking lot through Harvest Hosts.

I went to the Norman Rockwell Museum expecting bas I went to the Norman Rockwell Museum expecting basically ALL Norman Rockwell, but there's actually a lot more going on. The current exhibits bring Rockwell together with other American artists by theme, and I really liked seeing the work in that context.

(and yes there was a sign saying it was ok to pick an apple)
