The Ultimate Route 66 Itinerary: Our 3-Month Road Trip

We spent more than three months exploring every corner of Route 66 for its 100th anniversary, and we’d do it all over again. As full-time RVers, though, we couldn’t simply take a three-month vacation. We left our home base in the Chicago suburbs in late February, balancing work, everyday life, and even a detour for one of Josh’s work trips as we slowly made our way west. We reached the Santa Monica Pier on April 30 to celebrate the Route 66 Centennial, then spent another month making our way back east at a faster pace while checking off attractions we’d missed on the drive out. Later that summer, we returned once more for a long weekend exploring the Illinois portion of Route 66 without the RV. In this post, we’re sharing our complete Route 66 itinerary, including every stop, hike, quirky roadside attraction, museum, and campground that made this unforgettable road trip one of our favorite adventures yet. As we work on completely more blog posts about attraction and campground reviews, we’ll link those all here too!

February

4 Nights at Babler State Park, Wildwood, MO

Monday February 23: We drove from Josh’s dad’s house in the west suburbs to Babler State Park, which was just about 300 miles. Babler is a bit west of Saint Louis, and cheaper than any of the private campgrounds closer to the city.
Tuesday February 24: After work we explored the Weldon Spring Site and Pecan Legacy Park in Chesterfield, which isn’t really on Route 66 but they just both were interesting.
Wednesday February 25: We explored the town of Pacific on Route 66. We started at the Red Cedar Inn Museum, then visited Jensen’s Overlook, Bigfoot Headquarters, the Gardenway Motel Sign, Blackburn Park, and the Beacon Car Wash which has the old Beacon Hotel neon sign.
Thursday February 26: We went to Eureka to visit Route 66 State Park. We were in the off-season, so the visitor center was closed, but they had a bag of Route 66 Passport stamps outside. We saw the historic Route 66 bridge, the Keys Cafe neon sign, and the former town of Times Beach.

2 Nights at American Legion Post 639, Springfield, MO

Friday February 27: During a lunch break we explored more of Babler State Park itself. Then after work we started the drive to Springfield, MO. On the way we stopped at the Pulaski County Tourism Office for a Route 66 passport stamp, the Lebanon Route 66 Museum, and the Conway Rest Area which has a mini Route 66. We spent the night at American Legion Post 639 through Harvest Hosts. We had dinner and drinks at the post, and even met a couple who’s son-in-law went to school with Josh!
Saturday February 28: We spent the whole day exploring Springfield. We visited the Rockwood Motor Court, Route 66 Car Museum, Birthplace of Route 66 Roadside Park, History Museum on the Square, original Route 66 Steak and Shake, the grave of John Woodruff, Fun Acre Mini Golf, the World’s Largest Fork by Mass, and Relics Antique Mall. We had dinner at Springfield BrewCo and drinks at The Snug at Ty Iechyd Da Distillery. We spent the night again at the American Legion.

6 Nights at Baxter Springs Campground, Baxter Springs, KS

Sunday March 1: We drove from Springfield to Baxter Springs, Kansas, which was only about 86 miles. After we set up at camp we stopped by the Route 66 Kansas Visitor Center for some photos (it was closed) and then visited the Baxter Springs Heritage Museum.
Monday March 2: We used Baxter Springs as a base for exploring the KS-MO-OK tri-state area. On Monday, after work, we visited the nearby town of Galena, KS. We visited the Galena Mining and History Museum, the drive-through Route 66 sign and Luigi’s Pit Stop, the historic Rainbow Arch Bridge on Route 66, and did a quick stop at Sunflower Park for a photo. For dinner, we tried out the fried chicken from Harps Foods.
Tuesday March 3: We drove out to Joplin, MO after work. We first went to the Visit Joplin offices for a Route 66 passport stamp, then the Joplin History Museum, Joplin Route 66 Street Art Gallery, The Miracle of the Human Spirit tornado memorial, and drove by Bonnie & Clyde’s apartment. For dinner we went to Bricks & Brews in Baxter Springs, which does a wood-fired pizza buffet on Tuesday nights.
Wednesday March 4: We visited Webb City and Carthage, MO. We grabbed a passport stamp from the Webb City Chamber of Commerce and walked around downtown a little, tried to visit Supertam on Route 66 but they were closed, visited the Boots Court Motel, and then explored Red Oak II.
Thursday March 5: This time we went into Oklahoma to visit Miami and Commerce. We visited the Miami visitor center for a passport stamp, got a quick peek inside the Coleman Theatre, and took photos at some of the murals downtown. Then we went just outside of downtown to the original 9 foot wide section of Route 66 and then grabbed a quick photo at Waylans Kuku. In Commerce we visited the Mickey Mantle statue and Mantle’s childhood home, and got great shakes at Dairy King (and had a great chat with the super kind owners). Then we drove through the ghost town of Picher, OK.
Friday March 6: We wrapped up the last few things we hadn’t seen in Baxter Springs and Galena, all while anxiously watching the storm forecast. We went to the KS-MO-OK tristate marker, Cars on the Route, Gearhead Curios, and Liberty Pawn to see the Bonnie & Clyde shotgun. We checked out some photos spots around Galena and then had an early dinner at Kicks Bar and Grill. We visited Nelson’s Old Riverton Store- honestly mostly for the name. That night they were calling tornados and we were ready to go shelter in town if needed, but ended up having to move the whole rig because a sheriff’s deputy told us he was worried about the river flooding- so it was quite an adventure!

7 Nights at Brush Creek Park, Sand Springs, OK

Saturday March 7: After leaving Baxter Springs, we stopped at the Hi-Way Cafe in Vinita, OK for breakfast, and then drove the rest of the way to Brush Creek Park, just outside of Tulsa. All we did the rest of the day was get groceries and then relax after the late night with the storm.
Sunday March 8: We spent the day exploring Tulsa. We visited the grave of Cyrus Avery (Father of Route 66), the Outsiders House Museum, explored the Meadow Gold District on Route 66, had lunch at Tally’s Good Food Cafe on Route 66, went to Generations Antique Mall, and saw a showing of the Oscar nominated documentary shorts at Circle Cinema.
Monday March 9: Part of the day was spent at the walk-in clinic because Josh had a bad ear infection, but then our activity for the day was in the evening. We attended the Green Book Experience program at Greenwood Rising, and it was such a great program!
Tuesday March 10: We visited Woodward Park and Gardens, but it was a little too off-season still to see much, so then we went to Gathering Place and that was one of the coolest parks I’ve ever been to.
Wednesday March 11: We went to the Route 66 Historical Village, which calls itself an outdoor museum but there was less there than I had expected. We also visited I-44 Antique Mall on the way back to camp.
Thursday March 12: After work we drove out to Sapulpa. We went to the Heart of Route 66 Auto Museum, Rock Creek Bridge, took a photo at TeePee Drive-In, went o the Route 66 Vintage Market, and on the way back home tried Braum’s for the first time.
Friday March 13: Josh had to work late, but that worked out because I wanted to go to the Philbrook Museum of Art and on Fridays they have cheap tickets if you go after 5pm. I absolutely loved this museum!

1 Night at Route 66 Bowl, Chandler, OK

Saturday March 14: In the morning before we started our move day Josh went into Tulsa to go rock climbing at Climb Tulsa. Then we moved to Chandler, OK. We stopped first for a passport stamp at the Chandler Interpretive Center, but the exhibits didn’t seem worth what they charge for admission. Then we spent the night at Route 66 Bowl through Harvest Hosts. We bowled, played mini golf, and got pizza- it was a really fun night.

6 Nights at Edmond Elks Lodge, Edmond, OK

Sunday March 15: We drove to Edmond, OK where we stayed at the Edmond Elks Lodge, which is an easy drive into Oklahoma City. We visited both the First Americans Museum and National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum because we were able to get a combo ticket that gives you a discount. We also stopped in the Griffin Antique Mall in Edmond.
Monday March 16: We visited the Edmond History Museum, which has a small Route 66 exhibits. We got groceries and then revisited Guthrie Brewing to get the chicken & waffle pizza that we had loved when we went in the fall (it was better the first time).
Tuesday March 17: We went together to the Oklahoma History Center, and then later in the evening Josh went back into the city to go climbing at Threshold.
Wednesday March 18: Josh had work meetings, so we didn’t go out this day.
Thursday March 19: We visited Myriad Gardens and their really conservatory. Then we drove out to Arcadia to eat dinner at Chicken Shack on Route 66. Josh went climbing again, too.
Friday March 20: We visited the Arcadia Round Barn, the American Pigeon Museum, and Up-Down OKC (a fun barcade).

1 Night at Cactus Inn Motel, McLean, TX

Saturday March 21: We stopped along our drive to our Harvest Host at the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum in Clinton,OK and Conoco Tower in Shamrock, TX. Then we spent the night at the Cactus Inn Motel in McLean, TX through Harvest Hosts.

6 Nights at Route 66 RV Ranch, Amarillo, TX

Sunday March 22: We drove from our Harvest Host in McLean to Amarillo. We spent the day exploring the roadside art of Amarillo, including Cadillac Ranch, the Giant Legs of Amarillo, Combine City, and Slug Bug Ranch. We had dinner at Big Texan Steakhouse. We stayed at Route 66 RV Ranch for the second of what would become 3 total times there.
Monday March 23: We just ran errand, not much in Amarillo is open Mondays.
Tuesday March 24: We drove over to Vega, TX to visit the Milburn-Price Culture Museum on Route 66, as well as the restored Magnolia station across the road.
Wednesday March 25: We got our Route 66 passport stamp at Texas Ivy Antiques, then had dinner at the Golden Light Cafe and drinks at Old Tascosca Brewery- all on Route 66!
Thursday March 26: We took a short hike at Wildcat Bluff Nature Center.
Friday March 27: We drove out to Palo Duro Canyon State Park. We had visited here in the fall, but it is definitely worth a revisit! Then we went to Creek House Honey Farm in Canyon and shared a mead flight.

7 Nights at Enchanted Trails RV Park, Albuquerque, NM

Saturday March 28: After leaving Amarillo, we stopped at the official Route 66 midpoint and had breakfast at the Midpoint Cafe in Adrian, TX. After we got settled in at camp, we walked some of the Paseo del Bosque Trail in town and then drove part of Albuquerque’s Route 66 stretch.
Sunday March 29: We detoured off of Route 66 to drive to the Quarai Unit of Salinas Pueblo National Monument. Then we visited the National Monument headquarters and had lunch at High Mountain Grill in Tijeres. We hiked Carlito Springs just outside of ABQ, and then took advantage of the laundry room and pool table at the campground.
Monday March 30: We visited Petroglyph National Monument. We only had time after work for the visitor center and one hike.
Tuesday March 31: This was an errands day, we picked up a package at CVS and went grocery shopping.

April

Enchanted Trails, Continued

Wednesday April 1: We got our Route 66 passport stamp at Rio Grande Trading Post, then visited the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History. Last time we were in New Mexico we visited Los Alamos, but ran out of time for the Nuclear Museum.
Thursday April 2: Josh had to work late and then after dinner we had drinks at Unhinged Brewing and Distilling.
Friday April 3: We drove out to Bandelier National Monument. We did a few different hikes and had lunch at the park cafe. For dinner we met up with friends in Santa Fe at Harry’s Roadhouse.

3 Nights at Homolovi State Park, Winslow, AZ

Saturday April 4: We drove from Albuquerque, NM to Winslow, AZ. We did one of our rest stops at the El Malpais National Monument Visitor Center. We did a hike in the park last fall, but the Visitor Center had been closed so I wasn’t able to get my National Park passport stamp.
Sunday April 5: We spent Sunday exploring Holbrook, AZ. We visited the Plotz Plot, Petrified Forest National Park, Bucket of Blood street, and the Wigwam Motel.
Monday April 6: Despite the rain, we visited one of the ruins at Homolovi, then explored Winslow. We went to the HGTV art cars, Standin’ on the Corner Park, La Posada Hotel, Root Beer Stand, and just walked around downtown a bit.

6 Nights at Munds Park RV Park, Munds Park, AZ

Tuesday April 7: We moved the RV to Munds Park RV Park, near Flagstaff. All the campgrounds in Flagstaff itself are expensive, unless you’re set up for boondocking in the National Forest, which we’re not.
Wednesday April 8: We hiked the Janice Place Trail in the Coconino National Forest in Munds Park.
Thursday April 9: Josh had to work late, so we didn’t leave the campground. But the campground had a really nice fitness center, which we did take advantage of.
Friday April 10: We had to go into Flagstaff to get our truck looked at and ended up spending a couple hours with it at Meineke. We were able to walk to a National Forest trail from there and then had dinner at Culver’s.
Saturday April 11: Saturday we our day to explore Sedona. First we stopped at Montezuma Well and Montezuma Castle National Monument. Then we went to an arts and craft fair, tried to go to the Chapel of the Holy Cross- but it was way too crowded, went to the teal arches Mcdonald’s, and had lunch at Whole Foods. Sedona was crazy crowded. We did one hike in Fay Canyon, because we didn’t want to deal with the crowds of the more popular hikes. The drive to and from Sedona and Munds Park was really pretty, and worth it too.
Sunday April 12: We went into Flagstaff for a day of adventuring. We had just been here last September, and had already visited the 3 National Monuments, so didn’t need to revisit them. We visited Elden Pueblo Heritage Site, Picture Canyon, the Flagstaff Visitor Center, Citizens Cemetery, the original Muffler Man, Elizabeth Archuleta Park, and Thorpe Park. We had lunch at Mother Road Brewing and our last activity was a special Prohibition themed tour at the Riordan Mansion.

4 Nights at Kingman KOA, Kingman, AZ

Monday April 13: We moved from Munds Park to Kingman, AZ. We stopped along the way in Peach Springs and at the Hackberry General Store on Route 66.
Tuesday April 14: We visited the Kingman Visitor Center, Route 66 Museum, and Mohave Museum. We walked around downtown Kingman taking photos and then had dinner at Mr. D’z Diner.
Wednesday April 15: After work we hiked the White Cliffs Wagon Trail, which was so cool!
Thursday April 16: We had drinks at Desert Diamond Distillery, and had a great time talking to the owner. Then we had dinner at Rutherford’s Family Cafe.

7 Nights at Laughlin Avi Casino KOA, Laughlin, NV

Friday April 17: We left Kingman to go to Laughlin, Nevada. This was a detour off of Route 66 partly so we could check off staying in Nevada and partly so Josh could fly out of Las Vegas for a work trip.After setting up at camp we walked along the Colorado River in Laughlin and visited Poki the World’s Largest Desert Tortoise in Bullhead City, AZ. We also explored the casino a bit.
Saturday April 18: We had to drive back into Kingman to get the truck looked at again. While it was being worked on we walked to the movie theater and saw Project Hail Mary. Then when we got the truck back we drove out to Oatman, AZ on the old scenic stretch of Route 66. It was such a fun side trip!
Sunday April 19: We played mini golf at Scooter’s Family Fun Center in Bullhead City, which was a really nice course and a great value. Then that afternoon Josh left for his work trip.
Monday April 20-Friday April 24: Josh was on his work trip until Saturday, while I stayed with the RV and pets in Laughlin. I didn’t really do anything during this time other than hanging out at camp.

1 Night at Kingman KOA, Kingman, AZ

Saturday April 25: We had to go back to Kingman again for our truck, so this time we decided to just stay a night. After getting the truck back, we checked out some antique stores downtown and had dinner at Grand Canyon Brewing.

3 Nights at Joshua Tree Lake RV Park, Joshua Tree, CA

Sunday April 26: We left Laughlin and did a couple Route 66 stops in California before our next detour in Joshua Tree. We stopped at Roy’s Cafe and Motel in Amboy and the last tree of Bagdad, CA. After setting up at camp we went to the Joshua Tree National Park Visitor Center for maps for the next couple days.
Monday April 27: We spent the day in the National Park. We hiked to Samuelson’s Rocks, Wonderland Ranch, Ryan Ranch, Skull Rock, Cap Rock, Mara Oasis, and visited the 29 Palms Visitor Center.
Tuesday April 28: This was our second day in the park (Josh took PTO for the week). We looked for desert tortoises, hiked the Contact Mine Trail, drove out to the Cottonwood Visitor Center & Oasis, and visited the Black Rock Visitor Center.

3 Nights at Dockweiler Beach RV Park, Playa Del Ray, CA

Wednesday April 29: We were back on Route 66, first we stopped at the Cabazon Dinosaurs, and then made it to our campground in Los Angeles. We were super lucky that our friend Erica was in LA for a work trip at the same time, and our schedules perfectly overlapped to be able to get dinner together! We went to Wurstkuche in Venice Beach and shared a bunch of different sausages.
Thursday April 30: In the morning we visited the Getty Villa, then drove a little of the Pacific Coast Highway through Malibu. We stopped for lunch at Malibu Seafood and then took a tour of the Adamson House. In the afternoon we went to the Santa Monica pier for the Route 66 centennial celebration. Santa Monica was supposed to be a satellite city of the big celebration in Springfield, MO, but I don’t know what happened to the original plans. We did meet some other folks who had done a convergence and there were some speeches, so at least it was something. Then we had dinner at Mel’s Diner on the original LA section of Route 66.

Dockweiler Beach, Continued

Friday May 1: We did the Warner Brothers Studio Tour in the morning, which was so cool! Then we visited Griffith Observatory and the La Brea Tar Pits, both of which were on my LA bucket list.

Calico Ghost Town Campground, Yermo, CA

Saturday May 2: After leaving LA, we stopped at Emma Jean’s Holland Burger Cafe in Victorville and Elmer’s Bottle Tree Ranch. We spent the night at the Calico Ghost Town Campground in Barstow.
Sunday May 3: First we explored the Calico Ghost Town, since admission was included with our camping fee. Then we visited Liberty Sculpture Park, a weird anti Chinese Communism sculpture park in the desert. We then drove out to Newberry Springs to visit the real-life Bagdad Cafe, as seen in the titular movie. We then went into Barstow to visit the Route 66 Museum in an old Harvey House (I love Harvey Houses), the Big Fire Helmet, then had dinner at Peggy Sue’s in Yermo.

2 Nights at Seligman KOA, Seligman, AZ

Monday May 4: Now that we were working our way back East, we started moving at a quicker pace and trying to catch some of the big stuff we had missed before. Monday we moved from Barstow to Seligman, AZ. After getting set up, we had dinner at the Roadkill Cafe.
Tuesday May 5: We took a long lunch to explore downtown Seligman. We wandered around checking out shops and photo ops, and had some treats from Delgadillo’s Snow Cap.

2 Nights at Grand Canyon Railway Hotel RV Park, Williams, AZ

Wednesday May 6: We moved from Seligman to Williams. We stopped in the Williams Visitor Center for a Route 66 passport stamp, and then walked around exploring Route 66 downtown.
Thursday May 7: Josh had to work late, so we just walked around the area a bit and did laundry.

2 Nights at Bar S RV Park, Grants, NM

Friday May 8: We moved to Grants, New Mexico. On the way, though, our dining room window exploded at some point during the drive- so it was a very stressful move day. That afternoon was spent just going to the hardware store to try to get something to temporarily seal up the window.
Saturday May 9: We visited the New Mexico Mining Museum, which was really cool. Then we drove out to the Historic Airways Museum, which is small, but free and neat. We did a hike at El Malpais, even though we had visited in the fall, I just love hiking on lava so much.

3 Nights in Santa Rosa, NM

Sunday May 10: We drove to Santa Rosa, New Mexico. We stayed the first night at Santa Rosa Lake State Park, but realized we did not have good enough internet for Josh to do work calls. So we spent part of the day trying to decide what to do and how we wanted to move around reservations. That evening we saw The Devil Wears Prada 2 at Pecos Theatre. This is thought to be the oldest operating cinema on Route 66 and is now run by the county parks and rec department.
Monday May 11: In the morning we moved to Santa Rosa Campground & RV Park in town. Then after work we visited the Santa Rosa Auto Museum and had dinner at Burgers and Boba.
Tuesday May 12: The main reason we came to Santa Rosa was to swim in the Blue Hole. This is an 80 feet deep natural spring that’s a local swimming hole, and yes it’s very blue! It was super cold, but so neat to swim in.

1 Nights at Blaze-in Saddle RV Park, Tucumcari, NM

Wednesday May 13: We moved to Tucumcari, New Mexico where we spent one night. We went to the Mesalands Dinosaur Museum. Besides being a neat little museum, I especially love that it’s part of the community college since I used to work for community colleges. We also wandered downtown a little taking photos on Route 66, and then had dinner at Del’s Cafe.

2 Nights at Route 66 RV Ranch, Amarillo, TX

Thursday May 14: We went back to Amarillo, mostly because it’s just the best stopping pointing in Texas with a campground we like. After setting up camp we went to the Jack Sisemore RV Museum. This was our third time staying in Amarillo, but the first time the museum was open while we were there, since it’s closed seasonally.
Friday May 15: We had to go to Discount Tire to get a nail removed from our tire and patch. Then we drove outside of town a little to see the effects of a wildfire that had been going on that day. We finished the night with another dinner at Big Texan.

1 Night at Stafford Air and Space Museum, Weatherford, OK

Saturday May 16: We left Amarillo and went to Weatherford, Oklahoma. We stayed at the Stafford Air and Space Museum through Harvest Hosts and spent the afternoon exploring the museum. We had to move after we had already mostly set up because of an event going on, so the staff felt bad and gave us free admission, which was really nice.

5 Nights at Keystone State Park, Sand Springs, OK

Sunday May 17: Our next stay was back near Tulsa. We wanted to stay at the same Army Corps campground from before, but weren’t able to get all of the days we needed, so we stayed at the state park instead. After setting up, we drove to the other side of town to visit the Tulsa Zoo.
Monday May 18: Josh had late meetings and then went rock climbing at Climb Tulsa.
Tuesday May 19: We visited the Tulsa History Museum, drove the new musical highway, and had dinner at Sonic since it was started in Oklahoma.
Wednesday May 20: It was another rainy day where Josh had late meetings, so he went climbing again after dinner.
Thursday May 21: We went to happy hour at Big Whiskey’s Restaurant, visited the Tulsa Diller statue, and then went back to Circle Cinema. This time we watched Powwow Highway, which was free as part of their Rez Film Club.

1 Night at American Legion Post 639, Springfield, MO

Friday May 22: Checkout at Keystone State Park isn’t until the afternoon, so we worked a partial day before driving to Springfield, MO. We stayed at the American Legion through Harvest Hosts again. We had dinner at the Legion and then ran into town so Josh could get a Route 66 Centennial bottle from Ty Iechyd Da Distillery.

1 Nights at Route 66 Skyview Drive-In, Litchfield, IL

Saturday May 23: In the morning we walked over to the Springfield Botanical Gardens. Then we drove to our next Harvest Host in Litchfield, Illinois. We stayed at the Route 66 Skyview Drive-In, and were able to park the RV at the back of the lot and watch the movies from right there! They played a double feature of Top Gun and Top Gun Maverick in honor of the original’s anniversary.
Sunday May 24: We left the Harvest Host and drove back to Josh’s dad’s in Chicagoland.

Quick Visit to Both Route 66 Signs in Chicago

Sunday July 5: While in Chicago for the day with friends, we visited both Route 66 signs. The original Beginning of Route 66 sign is at Michigan & Adams, but they recently added a new ceremonial start sign at Navy Pier so that the Route can be pier to pier. They are pretty near each other, so it’s easy to visit both at once.

A Long Weekend Exploring Route 66 Illinois

Friday July 17: We met up with our good friend Erica for a weekend exploring the rest of Route 66 in Illinois, without the RV. We slowly worked our way through the state stopping at every small town along the way. Friday we made it from Joliet to Bloomington in about 10 hours, and then stayed the night.
Saturday July 18: We covered Bloomington to Springfield, IL.
Sunday July 19: We made it from Springfield to the Mississippi River, mostly using the older Route 66 alignment that follows Illinois 4.
Monday July 20: We drove the newer alignment that follows I-55 back up to Springfield, where we had lunch for the day before breaking off of the Route to head back home.
