10 Unique Things to Do in Paducah, Kentucky

Planning a visit and looking for the best things to do in Paducah, Kentucky? This creative river city is one of only a handful of UNESCO Creative Cities in the United States, and you feel that artistic, innovative energy everywhere you go. Paducah is full of unique museums, local shops, artsy spots, historic attractions, and plenty of good food and drinks- perfect for a weekend getaway or a quick stop along the river. We spent time exploring Paducah’s downtown and beyond, and rounded up our favorite places to visit, from hands-on museums to craft breweries to one-of-a-kind local experiences. Whether you’re into history, art, or just want to wander and see what you find, here are the top Paducah things to do to add to your list.

1. River Discovery Museum

Housed inside the oldest surviving antebellum building in Paducah’s historic downtown, the River Discovery Museum is one of those spots that’s way more fun than you expect a “river museum” to be. It dives into the stories of America’s great rivers, with hands-on exhibits like a boat-pilot simulator, music stations featuring “river music” from different eras, and displays about everything from steamboat culture to the role rivers played in the Civil War. I loved learning about the 1937 flood and the ecosystems hidden beneath the river’s surface, plus there’s a cute kids’ play area if you’re visiting as a family. And if you happen to be in town in summer, their big fundraiser, the Paducah Dragon Boat Festival, is a whole event by itself.

2. National Quilt Museum

Even if you’re not a quilter, the National Quilt Museum is one of those “wow, I didn’t expect to love this” stops. It’s considered America’s premier quilt museum, and its mission is to honor today’s quilters while inspiring the next generation- something you really feel as you walk through the galleries. The permanent collection showcases quilted artwork from the U.S. and around the world, all created after 1980, which gives the whole place a really modern, artistic vibe (not your grandma’s quilt display!). They also rotate in temporary exhibits throughout the year, so there’s always something new to see. And if you want to dive deeper, you can add on a guided tour for more stories about the artists and techniques.

3. William Clark Market House Museum

The William Clark Market House Museum is a fun stop if you love local history, and it ties directly back to the city’s roots. William Clark, from the Lewis and Clark Expedition, who later came back to this area and mapped out Paducah on a huge stretch of land where the Ohio and Tennessee Rivers meet. He picked a central spot for the town’s public market, and the third version of that market eventually became the Market House we see today. Inside, you’ll find a rotating collection of Paducah artifacts and stories, so there’s usually something new to discover. One of the coolest features is the restored wooden interior from the 1877 Dubois Robertson/List Drug Store, which was carefully rebuilt inside the museum back in the 1960s and now houses several of the exhibits. Other displays highlight local connections to Vice President Alben Barkley, Paducah’s Civil War history, a pair of chairs once used by President Lincoln, and even a 1913 LaFrance fire truck- perfect for anyone who loves quirky hometown history.

4. Dry Ground Brewing Company

Dry Ground Brewing Company is a great place to unwind, especially if you love a good craft beer in a cool space. It’s located inside the historic Coke Plant, a gorgeous Art Deco building that’s been transformed into a mixed-use spot with shops and event spaces, so the vibe alone is worth stopping in for. As Paducah’s first microbrewery, they pour their own original beers along with a lineup of guest taps, giving you plenty to try whether you like hoppy, dark, or easy-drinking brews. They also host fun community events like open-mic comedy nights, live music, and trivia, so it’s easy to catch something happening while you’re there.

5. Wall to Wall Floodwall Murals

Paducah’s Wall to Wall Floodwall Murals are one of the coolest things to see downtown- part outdoor art walk, part history lesson, and totally worth the stop. Painted by the Dafford Muralists, the panels tell the story of Paducah’s past in these vibrant, detailed scenes stretched along the floodwall right by the river. The project started back in the late ’90s and has grown into a multi-block timeline that was completed in stages over more than two decades. It’s open 24/7, free to wander, and super fun to explore at your own pace. Plus, you can watch boats move along the river while you take in the murals, which feels like the perfect pairing of Paducah’s present and past.

6. Market House Theatre

Market House Theatre is one of those community gems that’s grown into something so much bigger than its humble beginnings. Back in 1963, a small group of eight theatre lovers started a little local troupe, and that spark eventually evolved into the thriving volunteer-driven organization it is today, supported by a professional staff but fueled by community passion. They put on a wide mix of productions, from their Signature Series to family-friendly shows, Playtime performances, touring children’s theatre, and even murder mystery dinner events. The coolest part is that the theatre operates out of 11 historic buildings in downtown Paducah, so every visit feels like stepping into a piece of local history wrapped in creativity.

7. Paducah Antique Mall

Paducah has a ton of shopping options, but the Paducah Antique Mall ended up being one of our personal favorites. It’s a huge space packed with treasures from more than 40 vendors, offering everything from vintage furniture and glassware to comics, jewelry, toys, and all sorts of collectibles. You can easily lose track of time wandering the aisles and hunting for quirky finds or nostalgic pieces. Whether you’re a serious antique shopper or just love browsing for fun, it’s a great place to explore, and you never know what you’ll walk out with.

8. Paducah Railroad Museum

The Paducah Railroad Museum is a fun stop for anyone who loves trains or just appreciates a little nostalgia. Run by the local chapter of the National Railway Historical Society, the museum highlights equipment, artifacts, and memorabilia from the golden age of American railroads. One of the big draws is the train simulator, where you can hop into a mock locomotive cab and get a feel for what it’s like to operate a train- kids (and honestly, adults) love it. They also host special events throughout the year, like a Polar Express party, themed story times, and Thomas the Tank Engine celebrations, so it’s a great spot for families. The galleries are filled with historic pieces and displays that give you a look at Paducah’s railroad heritage in a hands-on, approachable way.

9. Forever Sweet Creamery

Forever Sweet Creamery is the kind of place you walk into “just to look” and immediately realize you’re not leaving without a treat. It’s a family-owned shop that specializes in homemade, hand-dipped artisan ice cream, but it’s really a full-on sweet tooth paradise with bakery items, candies, and other goodies all under one roof. Everything we tried was delicious- but the real endorsement is that Josh liked it so much he went back for ice cream twice. If you’re craving something cold, creamy, or just plain indulgent, this spot is a must.

10. Silent Brigade Distillery

Silent Brigade Distillery is a fun, laid-back spot to sip your way through Paducah’s local spirits scene. They focus on producing small-batch whiskey and moonshine made with high-quality local grains, and you can really taste the care that goes into each bottle. The distillery was started in 2014 by friends and co-workers Keith Bundy and John Brown, who first bonded over their love of researching and crafting copper stills, after building stills for other distilleries, they finally opened their own place. Today, Silent Brigade has become a community hangout too, hosting events like karaoke nights, holiday parties, and themed celebrations. It’s a great mix of good drinks, local craftsmanship, and a fun atmosphere.
