    May 16, 2024 - By Jen

We visited Metropolis, Illinois- the official hometown of Superman. The town of Metropolis was founded in 1839 and was home to a 1700s fort before that. But it wasn’t until many years later that residents noticed that the town happened to share the name with Superman’s hometown. In 1972, the…

Josh grew up doing Memorial Day ceremonies with Bo Josh grew up doing Memorial Day ceremonies with Boy Scouts, so when we happened to be in the Washington DC area for Memorial Day we wanted to find something special to do.

Sunday we visited Arlington National Cemetery for Flowers of Remembrance- the only time that the public is allowed to walk up to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to place a flower. Then we caught the end of their Meet a Sentinel event, a lecture on the history of Memorial Day, and a walking tour focused on Army history in honor of the Army's 250th birthday.

Monday, we went into DC proper. We didn't get to everything we wanted to, but we got to watch the Memorial Day Parade- which is considered the largest Memorial Day event in the country. The parade itself was neat, but walking around before-hand through the setup might have been even cooler. Everywhere we walked there were bands rehearsing and it was pretty wild to witness (and hear!).

While in Alabama, we, of course, had to do the tra While in Alabama, we, of course, had to do the track tour at Talladega Superspeedway and it was actually SO cool. Josh is a big NASCAR fan, so of course he was loving every second- and now he’s convinced we have to come back someday for a real race. 🏁

I’m not a racing person at all, but getting the behind-the-scenes tour, checking out Victory Lane, and seeing the garage area up close was honestly really interesting. And riding the shuttle bus on the actual track?? Those turns are STEEP- like, way more intense than they look on TV! 👀

New blog post is up with all the details, prices, tips, and our review if you ever wanna check it out (or surprise the NASCAR fan in your life with a fun day trip 😉).
