Touring Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary was like stepping into a chilling time capsule. From infamous inmates to eerie energy in every corridor, this place is packed with history- and a few ghost stories too. 👻

After walking the cell blocks, we did a whiskey tasting at the on-site distillery 🥃 and grabbed a bite at The Warden’s Table. Who knew prison could taste this good? 😅

We survived our whirlwind weekend in Maryland! Jo We survived our whirlwind weekend in Maryland!

Josh and I got to Maryland last week, but then this last Thursday was when his coworkers got to town and the real excitement began. We started off Thursday afternoon at the USGS Bee Lab. The lab offers growing space for local organizations, so we potted some seedlings with Wild Ones Chesapeake Bay and then took a tour of the new lab building. The Bee Lab is on the federal chopping block, so they have been minimizing their projects in case they have to close. That means the shrubs Josh and I planted last year in a new research plot are gone and rehomed, so it was pretty sad. We are still holding out hope, though, that funding can be saved or the lab can be moved to USFWS!

After the bee lab, we headed to DC Green Drinks at Metro Bar. We met lots of great people here!

Friday we spent the day with Wild Ones Chesapeake Bay setting up for NatureFest and meeting with the BBC crew that would be filming the event! We ended up Friday night with having to pick up Josh's boss and coworker from the restaurant we all had dinner at and take them to the impound lot to get the rental car back (don't worry, it's their own fault it got towed 😛).

Saturday was NatureFest at College of Southern Maryland, put on by Wild Ones Chesapeake Bay, Neighborhood Creative Arts Center, and Keep La Plata Beautiful. We helped staff the Wild Ones booth and hung out with Molly the Monarch. We ended Saturday night at the demolition derby! We went with Josh's boss and his coworker & her family- it was everyone else's first time at a demo derby, so that made it extra fun.

Sunday, we drove from Maryland to the eastern edge of Ohio where we stayed at a great Harvest Hosts winery. Then Monday, we had a few more hours to drive to the Detroit area. Our crazy weekend is done for me, but now Josh is at a conference in Detroit for the next two days. Meanwhile, I'm hanging back at our campsite by the beach!
Josh grew up doing Memorial Day ceremonies with Bo Josh grew up doing Memorial Day ceremonies with Boy Scouts, so when we happened to be in the Washington DC area for Memorial Day we wanted to find something special to do.

Sunday we visited Arlington National Cemetery for Flowers of Remembrance- the only time that the public is allowed to walk up to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to place a flower. Then we caught the end of their Meet a Sentinel event, a lecture on the history of Memorial Day, and a walking tour focused on Army history in honor of the Army's 250th birthday.

Monday, we went into DC proper. We didn't get to everything we wanted to, but we got to watch the Memorial Day Parade- which is considered the largest Memorial Day event in the country. The parade itself was neat, but walking around before-hand through the setup might have been even cooler. Everywhere we walked there were bands rehearsing and it was pretty wild to witness (and hear!).
