Decorating an RV for Christmas is one of my favorite parts of full-time travel. Even though we’re working with limited space (and even more limited storage!), a few smart choices can make your tiny home feel just as festive as any house. Over the past few years, I’ve tried different decorating styles, learned what works best in a moving home on wheels, and found plenty of RV-friendly Christmas decor ideas that bring all the cozy holiday vibes without the clutter. In this post, I’m sharing my best tips, a look at our past Christmas setups, and shoppable moodboards to help you find a holiday style that fits your camper perfectly.
Before we dive into my personal decor and inspiration boards, let’s start with the basics. These simple RV decorating tips and space-saving ideas will help you create a festive setup that feels magical without overwhelming your small space.
RV Christmas Decorating Tips + Space-Saving Ideas
Decorating an RV for Christmas is all about finding the balance between festive and functional. Small spaces, limited storage, and the realities of travel mean your holiday decor needs to work a little harder, and be a lot smarter. Here are the things I always keep in mind when decorating our rig, plus a bunch of space-saving ideas that make a big impact without taking up precious room.
Things to Keep in Mind When Decorating an RV
- Weight matters. RVs have strict weight limits, so choose lightweight materials like felt, fabric, paper, or thin wood cutouts. Skip anything heavy or bulky.
- Storage space is limited. Look for items that are collapsible, stackable, or small enough to tuck into a single bin. Multi-use pieces, like garlands that can double for winter decor, are a bonus.
- Avoid breakables. Travel days happen, even if you stay put for December. Opt for shatterproof ornaments, soft garlands, plastic bells, and non-glass accents that won’t crack if something shifts.
- Use RV-safe hanging solutions. Command hooks, Velcro strips, small suction cups, and twist ties are your best friends. Avoid nails or anything that might damage walls or cabinets.
- Prioritize LED or battery-operated lights. They use less power, stay cool to the touch, and are easier on your electrical system. Plus, you can place them anywhere without worrying about outlets.
- Make setup and takedown simple. Especially if you move often- quick-decor options like pre-lit garlands, magnetic hooks, and removable window clings save so much time.
Space-Saving RV Christmas Decoration Ideas
Small-space decorating is basically an art form, but these RV-friendly ideas can bring in all the Christmas cheer without sacrificing surfaces or storage:
- Use vertical space. Hang garlands, wreaths, or string lights on walls, windows, and above slide-outs.
- Decorate cabinets and doors. Add mini wreaths, ribbon, or holiday signs using Command hooks or Velcro.
- Choose mini or tabletop trees. They give you the Christmas tree magic without the footprint. You can even put one on your dining table or counter without losing space.
- Swap out textiles. Seasonal pillow covers, cozy throws, or a festive runner instantly update the space, and they take almost no room to store.
- Hang stockings creatively. Clip them to a window frame, cabinet handles, or a command strip instead of needing a mantel.
- Add lights to what you already have. Wrap fairy lights around indoor plants, shelves, or headboards for an instant cozy glow.
- Use removable window clings. They add fun holiday charm, are completely damage-free, and take up almost no storage space.
- Try holiday-scented touches. If you don’t want decor cluttering surfaces, a Christmas-scented diffuser or simmer pot brings in the holiday mood without taking up room.
- Decorate with greenery picks. Tuck faux greenery into baskets, shelves, or plants—big impact, tiny footprint.
- Use magnetic surfaces. Many RVs have magnetic fridge doors or vent covers- mini magnetic signs or ornaments work great here.
RV Safe Decorating Supplies I Always Keep on Hand
- A variety of Command hooks
- Hook and loop (Vecro) fastener
- Battery operated fairy lights
- Double sided Alien tape
- Christmas ornament hooks (also great for wiring garland in place!)
- Museum wax

Now that you’ve got a sense of what works well in an RV, here’s a look at how I’ve decorated our own rig over the past couple of years. Each setup reflects a different style, and shows how easy it is to switch things up with the right RV-friendly decor.
My RV Christmas Decor Through the Years
As of writing this post, we’ve spent two Christmases in the RV and are getting ready for our third! I’ve always been a big holiday decorator, even back when we lived in a house, and I still have a pretty good-sized Christmas collection. Thankfully, we’re able to store everything in Josh’s dad’s basement, which means I can switch up our RV decor each year without worrying about space in the rig.
Since we stay in one place all December, I don’t have to think about travel days with decorations out- but I do still have to decorate with a small space in mind. We have very limited surface space, so I stick to lightweight, RV-friendly pieces like garlands, hanging decor, and an ever-growing collection of floral picks. (I’ll stick festive faux greenery anywhere I can!)
For our first RV Christmas in 2023, I leaned into a natural, woodsy theme. In 2024, I switched things up with more of a Midcentury Modern, vintage-inspired vibe.
