Chattanooga totally surprised us in the best way. It’s one of those cities that blends quirky attractions, outdoor adventures, artsy vibes, and just enough small-town charm to make you want to stay a little longer. We spent a few days exploring and found everything from waterfalls inside a mountain to vintage pinball machines and giant outdoor sculptures. Whether you’re into nature, history, art, or just random fun, there’s something here for everyone. Here’s a list of some of our favorite things to do in Chattanooga!

1. Meet the Residents of the Chattanooga Zoo
301 N Holtzclaw Ave, Chattanooga, TN 37404
https://www.chattzoo.org/
Open daily 9am-5pm
$10.95-$15.95
The Chattanooga Zoo is a fun, low-key stop that’s perfect if you’re traveling with kids, or if you just love animals (no shame, we do too). It’s on the smaller side, which makes it easy to explore in a couple hours without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. You’ll find everything from red pandas and jaguars to chimpanzees and reptiles, plus some hands-on experiences like a petting zoo and camel rides depending on the season. It’s super walkable, nicely shaded in parts, and has a friendly, local vibe that makes it feel more personal than some of the giant zoos out there.
2. Soak Up Creativity at the Hunter Museum of American Art
10 Bluff View Ave, Chattanooga, TN 37403
https://www.huntermuseum.org/
Wednesday-Monday 10am-5pm, Thursday 10am-8pm
$18-20
The Hunter Museum of American Art is worth a visit even if you’re not a big “museum person.” It’s perched on a bluff overlooking the Tennessee River, so the views alone are amazing, but the art is just as impressive. The collection covers everything from classic 19th-century paintings to bold modern pieces, with a good mix of rotating exhibits that keep things fresh. The building itself is a cool mix of historic and modern architecture, and it’s small enough that you can enjoy it without spending your whole day inside. Bonus: it’s right by the Walnut Street Bridge and Bluff View Art District, so it’s easy to pair with other nearby spots.

3. Get Hooked at the International Towing & Recovery Museum
3315 Broad St, Chattanooga, TN 37408
https://towingmuseum.com/
Monday-Sunday 9am-5pm
$8-12
Yes, there is actually a museum dedicated to tow trucks, and it’s way cooler than you’d think. The International Towing & Recovery Museum is one of those quirky, unexpected gems that makes Chattanooga fun to explore. It dives into the history of towing with vintage wreckers, memorabilia, and even a Hall of Fame honoring folks in the industry. Whether you’re a car buff or just into offbeat attractions, it’s surprisingly interesting and super kid-friendly too (lots of big trucks to check out!).
4. Wander Among Giants at Sculpture Fields at Montague Park
1800 Polk Street, Chattanooga, TN, 37408
https://www.sculpturefields.org/
Open daily dusk-dawn
Free
The Sculpture Fields at Montague Park is like an outdoor art museum meets a giant city park- totally free and super fun to wander around. It’s a huge open space with massive sculptures scattered throughout, and you can walk right up to (or even under) most of them. The art ranges from abstract and modern to just plain funky, and there’s plenty of room for kids to run around or for a laid-back picnic. It’s a great place to stretch your legs, snap some cool photos, and enjoy a different side of Chattanooga’s creative scene.

5. Play Your Way Through the Classic Arcade Pinball Museum
409 Broad St, Chattanooga, TN 37402
https://www.chattanoogapinballmuseum.com/
Tuesday-Thursday 1-9pm, Friday 1-10pm, Saturday 10am-10pm, Sunday 11am-9pm
$16-20
The Classic Arcade Pinball Museum is pure nostalgic fun- part museum, part playable arcade. It’s packed with vintage pinball machines and classic arcade games, and the best part is you can actually play them all. One admission gets you unlimited plays, so it’s easy to lose track of time hopping from one machine to the next. The whole place has a retro vibe, and it’s a blast whether you’re reliving your childhood or introducing your kids to the games you grew up with. Definitely a fun, quirky stop right in the heart of downtown.
6. Dive Into Discovery at the Tennessee Aquarium
1 Broad St, Chattanooga, TN 37402
https://tnaqua.org
Sunday-Friday 10am-7pm, Saturday 9am-7pm
$29.95-$39.95
The Tennessee Aquarium is one of Chattanooga’s biggest attractions—and for good reason. It’s split into two buildings (one for river ecosystems and one for ocean life), and both are packed with super cool exhibits. You’ll see everything from playful otters and massive catfish to jellyfish, penguins, and a walk-through butterfly garden. The layout is really well done, and you can get up close to a lot of the animals without it feeling overcrowded. It’s great for all ages, easy to spend a few hours in, and right on the riverfront, so the views outside are just as nice as what’s inside.

7. See Rock City
1400 Patten Road, Lookout Mountain, GA 30750
https://www.seerockcity.com/
Open daily 10am-10:30pm
$21-46
Rock City is one of those classic roadside attractions that actually lives up to the hype. It’s perched on Lookout Mountain, just a short drive from downtown Chattanooga, and the views are incredible- you can supposedly see seven states from the top on a clear day. The walking trail takes you through some seriously cool rock formations, winding paths, and even a swinging bridge, with quirky surprises like gnome scenes and the colorful Fairyland Caverns along the way. It’s a fun mix of nature and nostalgia, and definitely one of those “only in Chattanooga” kind of experiences.
8. Chase an Underground Wonder at Ruby Falls
1720 S. Scenic Highway, Chattanooga, TN 37409
https://www.rubyfalls.com/
$18.95-$41.95
Ruby Falls is a total must-do while you’re in Chattanooga- where else can you tour a cave and see a waterfall inside a mountain? The guided tour takes you through some impressive underground formations before you reach the main event: a 145-foot waterfall deep inside Lookout Mountain. The lighting and dramatic reveal are a little cheesy in the best way, and it’s genuinely cool to experience. The walk is easy enough for most people, and it’s a great option if you’re trying to beat the heat or rain for a bit. Definitely one of those “wow” stops that’s fun for all ages.
9. Stroll Along the Chattanooga Riverwalk
https://www.visitchattanooga.com/blog/post/a-guide-to-chattanoogas-riverwalk
The Chattanooga Riverwalk is one of the best ways to soak in the city at a slower pace. It’s a paved path that stretches for miles along the Tennessee River, with plenty of spots to stop and take in the views, grab a snack, or just people-watch. You’ll pass parks, public art, scenic overlooks, and even some great local restaurants right off the trail. Whether you’re walking, biking, or just strolling with a coffee, it’s a peaceful, beautiful way to explore a different side of Chattanooga. Plus, it connects to spots like the Bluff View Art District and the Tennessee Aquarium, so it’s easy to make a full day of it.
10. All Aboard the Chattanooga Choo Choo
The Chattanooga Choo Choo is a fun blend of history, entertainment, and just plain cool vibes. It used to be a train station, and now it’s a hotel and entertainment complex- but you can still see the original terminal, explore restored train cars, and learn about the city’s railroad past. Even if you’re not staying there, it’s worth a visit to walk the grounds, grab a drink or a bite at one of the on-site restaurants, or catch some live music. It’s quirky, iconic, and a great photo op, especially if you’ve got that song stuck in your head the whole time.
